I painted this on location behind the asylum, Saint Paul de Masole, in Saint Remy. The mistral wind was blowing so steadily that I had to use two smaller canvases so it all would not be blown away. Just beyond the trees in the background is a very steep drop. This looks out onto the excavated ancient city of Glanum. When Vincent Van Gogh was in residence in the asylum, Glanum had not yet been discovered.
